Motorcycle Gang On A Murder Hunt.
A killer has chosen the Grave Diggers and their heavy machines as a target.
Stone is a film for horsepower freaks and fans of heavy machinery.

The long haired Sandy leads the "Grave Diggers" motorcycle gang. Sandy runs a strict camp. Anyone who doesn't follow the rules is kicked out. In the largest park in Sydney, a politician gives a glowing speech against the mafia, which wants to take control of the city with its evil methods. Three shots are fired from an ambush; the politician collapses, fatally hit. The murderer, a paid mafia killer, escapes, but there was a witness who saw the murderer: a member of the "Grave Diggers" motorcycle gang! This is how the Australian film "Stone" begins, which opens here on July 10th. To intimidate the "Grave Diggers", the killer strikes three more times. He kills three members of this group: The first speeds down the country road and overlooks a steel cable stretched across the road at head height. The second dies when his machine explodes after an explosive device was attached to it. The third is forced off the road by a car driver and crashes his motorcycle off a cliff. The "Grave Diggers", rough fellows who prefer sitting on their hot bikes or engaging in street fights with rival biker gangs, are clueless. Who can the sinister murderer be? Then the young police officer Stone, a motorcycle freak himself, appears among them to hunt the murderer, but the "Grave Diggers" initially don't want a police officer in their ranks. Only after Stone saves the gang boss Sandy from an attacker who wanted to kill him with a bow and arrow is Stone accepted as a new member. As a visible sign, he must wear a skull earring. In a tough fight in a cemetery, the "Grave Diggers" manage to corner the murderer. They want to Lynch him, but Stone doesn't allow this and protects the murderer. He is expelled from the group. A film for all motorcycle fans, because some of the Grave Diggers are famous Australian races who perform numerous stunts  with their machines. Bravo Magazine 1981.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Atelier Weber operated as a prominent independent German graphic boutique frequently commissioned by independent film distribution houses such as Senator Filmand Filmwelt. The studio specialized in adapting foreign action, horror, and exploitation cinema specifically tailored for the conservative yet visually sophisticated West German theatrical market. Deviating from standard industry practices that relied on cluttered text placement or standard colour stills, Atelier Weber's signature house style leaned heavily into minimalist typographic layouts integrated with high contrast, screen-printed colour reductions.

When analysing the exact text provided, collector communities and print historians can verify the authenticity of an original 1981 West German theatrical printing (prior to any regional French text overlays added for neighbouring markets like Belgium or Switzerland) by checking the paper border. A legitimate theatrical sheet from this era features a microscopic print line running along the absolute bottom edge. Confirming the provenance of the poster, you will typically find the credits "Design: Atelier Weber" or "Grafik: A. Weber" positioned directly alongside the official distributor's logo or the designated commercial printer line.
'The most feared of all gangs, the grave diggers, the outcasts, the hunted, they are back with a concentrated power of 360,000cc on 800 wheels... no one can stop them. On man tries it, they call him Stone. STONE with those who made Mad Max a success'. ALFA FILM.

The movie Stone made its DVD United Kingdom debut some 25 years after its release on Friday 17th April 1999 in London's renowned Ace Cafe. The film was screened on an enormous inflatable outdoor screen in the car park of the venue; however, the audience of hardened bikers eventually decamped to the relative luxury of the cafe's stage area. Participants rode to the event on Harley Davison's, Japanese Superbikes and even a few Kawasaki Z900's. The screening was engineered by Future Productions who provided a trademark outdoor 'cinema in a box' solution, including a massive inflatable projection surface, rock and roll sound rig and high powered digital projection equipment, all housed in a van and fully portable. One of the key features of the screening was the interest attracted by passers by and motorists on the nearby North Circular Road, who were surprised to see giant images of unwashed 1974 Australian bikers alongside their Friday night commute home.  The screening marked the release of the two disk DVD 'Stone' special edition by Severin Film.

CentreThis specific booklet from 1985 represents the final era of Video Tape Center, a major independent home video distributor in the UK. Unlike general consumer magazines sold at newsstands, this catalogue used a hybrid business to business and direct to consumer distribution strategy designed to push movie rentals
Picture
Video Rental Shops: The primary method of distribution was physical placement on counter spaces inside local, independent video rental stores across the UK. Shop owners used them as reference guides and customers could browse them to see upcoming or available titles to rent.

Mail Order Request Bumper: VTC heavily promoted this booklet directly on their VHS tapes. At the beginning or tail end of their movie releases, a distinct animated commercial bumper would play. A live action hand was shown opening and flipping through these exact pages while an announcer states:
"And now, get your free copy of the VTC rentals catalogue with details of the complete range of video entertainment available from VTC..."

The Postal Address: Viewers were instructed to write a letter to their London headquarters at VTC Video, No. 1, Newton St., London, XXXX  to have a copy mailed directly to their house for free.

Finders Keepers contracted the French manufacturing plant MPO to remaster, lacquer cut, and manufacture the 10th Anniversary Edition of Billy Green's Stone. The 10th Anniversary edition was completely remastered and repackaged, the engineers had to cut brand new metal master plates (lacquers and stampers). MPO stick to a very strict minimum production run for test pressings, only manufacturing five copies maximum to the record label. When those five copies were shipped from France to Finders Keepers Records, they were strictly functional copies. Two copies went to the mastering engineer to check for faults, two copies went to the label head for approval and one went directly to the artist. This test pressing was pressed solely to check the new audio plates cut for the 10th Anniversary Remaster from Finders Keepers Records.

United Kingdom Distributors New Realm signed the Stone contract for theatrical release in July 1980; however, Sandy stated that 'New Realm failed to protect the copyright of Stone in Britain as they were obligated to do'; thus, was seeking an alternative British Distributor, because between Monday 14th January - Wednesday 17th March 1980 an American TV series was released in Britain under the same name as Stone. Sandy believed Britain should be the major market in Europe for Stone. He proposed a new release title, suggesting the inclusion of the title 'Grave Diggers' to distinguish the film from the American TV series.

American Distribution Company Group One Productions was interest in the British rights to release Stone in the USA; however, Sandy did not support the intent for the film to be dubbed into 'American' or there proposal to release the film any way they liked, believing he would have no control over the cutting, dubbing or titling of Stone; thus, refused to accept the deal.  In November 1983 a discussion was held in Los Angeles between Hedon Productions, International Films and Deveco Filmverwertung Objekt II GmbH to distributed the film on a rollout basis in the USA, with the proposed plan to release the film in drive-in theatres.

New Beverly Cinema Los Angeles California. 'Stone' March 2011.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is the owner and head monthly programmer at the New Beverly Cinema. Committed to celluloid, Quentin made the unique decision to have the New Beverly solely project film prints. 'I want the New Beverly to be a bastion for 35mm films. I want it to stand for something. When you see a film on the New Beverly calendar, you don’t have to ask whether it’s going to be shown in DCP or in 35mm. You know it’s playing in 35 because it’s the New Beverly.'

Many of the 35mm and 16mm prints shown are from Quentin’s private collection. One of the prime reasons he wanted to run the New Beverly was to share his collection with an audience, 'I have a really, really huge film-print collection that I’ve been curating for almost 20 years now and I want to show my prints. We’ll still be borrowing prints from the studios and other collectors, but I like the idea that the base of what we’re doing will be my print collection... I want people to see them, to enjoy them'.

MOTORCYCLISTS... STARS ON THE CROISETTE As if that weren't already possible, the Croisette is likely to experience even more traffic jams tomorrow evening. Indeed, for the presentation of "Stone" (Australia), a fantastic film celebrating motorcycling, all motorcyclists are invited to gather this Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Palm Beach parking lot. From there—in what promises to be a spectacular parade—they will accompany stars Sandy Harbutt and Elisabeth Isaac to the Carlton Hotel. The screening is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at the Rex Cinema. Spread the word!

Cannes Festival Tuesday 25th May 1982. Peace and tranquility of Sunday night on the Croisette was assaulted by the sounds of high revving engines and windhorns as the bikes from Cannes, Nice and Marseille came to town. Lead by Australian film maker Sandy Harbutt on his Suzuki 1100 (the most powerful bike in town). They travelled from the Regent along the Rue d' Antibes to the old port, along the Croisette shattering the calm night air and turning the heads of diners and drinkers in the bars and restaurants. Then back to the Regent for Sandy Harbutts Stone, a classy feature that could be called the Easy Rider of the 80's. Stone followed its initial opening success in Australia with a smash hit in Germany where Martin Feller's Senator Films grossed over six million D.Marks with the film. Britain's New Realm Film will open Stone later this year and a similar response is expected.

'If you were impressed by Mad Max this movie it will shock you. No dynamic adventure can compete with it, Its violent action reaches the ultimate and leaves viewers speaking out of the action... with super powerful actors'.

Annoying: 'Stone is the name of a squeaky clean outsider police officer who wants to protect a biker sect, the Grave Diggers from the not exactly appetising stalking of a professional killer, and as a thank you for his efforts, is beaten half to death by the bikers. This concoction was made in Australia in 1974 and probably only found its way into our cinemas due to a distributors oversight'. Rolf Giesen.

Rocker Life without Romance: 'The young Australian Sandy Harbutt had big plans for his feature film debut, Stone. He directs, plays one of the lead roles, is a producer and screenwriter. His ambitious  plan has paid-off. Stone is already one of the most successful films in Australian film history.  Stone (Ken Shorter) is young, unconventional, causal, long haired dedicated police officer. He infiltrates a rocker gang to solve a series of murders. Sandy Harbutt, playing the rocker boss has obviously studied the gangs habits intensely, because he portrays their daily life in an old fort in which they have barricade  themselves in, convincingly without romance, without brutality. Stone grows naturally into the gang hierarchy. His inner conflicts erupt when the murderers are exposed and the rockers take the law into their own hands. Stone must decide for a life with the bikers or a life to upholding the law.  Apollo.

'A partially well-made action flick, whose fiery trail of blood, however, obscures all good intentions'. BNN Karisruhe.

'The viewer is confronted with the biker theme , with their discipline and lifestyle, their sense of freedom and their code of honor... a hint of Easy Rider resonates. Only in the final part does the brutality become more open.'
 Main Post Wurzburg.

'The director makes an unconvincing attempt to enrich the heckneyed action patterns of the biker film with human understanding and political backgrounds'. Kilmer Stadt-Anzeiger.

'Accompanied by compact rock music, a fast paced nostalgic cinematic duel between bikers and killers unfolds, featuring breakneck stunt manoeuvres. Motorcycle freaks will have a blast'. Abendpost Frankfurt.

Whats bad about this film is less the excessively depicted Boy Scout games of the bikers, but rather the questionable self-image, the elitist arrogance with which they live from day to day, doing nothing but smoking weed, having sex, playing pinball and riding their motorcycles at breakneck speed and where the comparatively normal outside world could disrupt this down and out idyll alternative world. Enemy images are constructed that leave no cliche unturned and turn almost everyone into everyday psychopaths'. Guntram Lenz.

Thee Parkside is a legendary underground punk and metal sanctuary. Under operator Malia Spanyol's stewardship, the venue has cemented its reputation with community traditions, like the Fourth of July tricycle race and secret pop up shows by Green Day's side project. Duff’s Monday Movie Nights transform the space into a retro cinema hub for local bikers and film buffs. Because it is a completely free neighbourhood event with no formal RSVP or ticket required to enter, people freely wander onto the outdoor patio, grab food from the kitchen or pull up a stool at the bar. These weekly film nights generally host a tight knit, casual crowd of local regulars, film enthusiasts and neighbourhood motorcycle riders.
